Quick answer: Debt review is a legal process under the National Credit Act. A registered debt counsellor works out what you can afford, negotiates lower instalments and interest with your credit providers, and has the plan made a court order. If you live anywhere in the City of Tshwane, you can start with a free assessment by phone, WhatsApp or our online form, or visit our Pretoria office.

A Pretoria debt counsellor, not a national call centre

We are based in Pretoria. Our office is at 463 Protea Street, Strubenkop, Pretoria East, open Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 16:00. You deal with the same small team from your first call to your clearance certificate, led by Leandie Brink: a registered debt counsellor with more than 15 years’ experience and a member of the DCASA National Executive Committee for Gauteng.

Prefer not to travel? Most clients never need to. The whole process works by phone, WhatsApp and email.

Areas we serve in Tshwane

Your City of Tshwane account and debt review

Rates, water and electricity accounts are not credit agreements under the National Credit Act, so they cannot be included in debt review. We build them into your budget as essential expenses instead, so the debt review payment we agree is one you can keep up with alongside your municipal bill.

How debt review works

Five steps, usually over 3 to 5 years. We handle the paperwork, the negotiations and the court application.

1. Assess

A free, no-obligation look at your income, living costs and debt, to see whether you are over-indebted.

2. Protect

We notify your credit providers and the credit bureaus. From then on they may not start new legal action on the accounts included.

3. Restructure

We negotiate lower instalments and interest with each credit provider, so the total fits your budget.

4. Order

Your restructured plan is made an order of the magistrate’s court, or confirmed by the National Consumer Tribunal.

5. Clear

You pay one amount a month through an NCR-registered payment distribution agency until you receive your clearance certificate.

Timing matters: if a credit provider has already sent you a Section 129 notice on an account, that account can no longer be included in debt review. Contact us as soon as you start falling behind, not when the summons arrives.

What debt review costs

Debt counselling fees are capped by law, and your first conversation with us costs nothing.
Your first assessmentFree, no obligation
Application feeR50, once-off
Restructuring feeYour first restructured instalment, capped at R8,000 (R9,000 for a joint application by spouses married in community of property)
Aftercare fee5% of your monthly instalment, capped at R450 a month

Fees are set by the National Credit Regulator and exclude VAT. Payment distribution agency fees and any legal costs are separate, and we explain every amount in writing before you sign anything.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to come to your office?

No. You are welcome to visit us at our Pretoria office during office hours, but most clients complete the whole process by phone, WhatsApp and email.

Which court makes my plan an order?

Your restructured plan is made an order of the magistrate’s court for the area where you live, or confirmed by the National Consumer Tribunal. We prepare and handle the application for you.

I work for government. Can I go under debt review?

Yes. Debt review is open to anyone who is over-indebted, whoever your employer is, and your employer is not notified. If you already have a garnishee (emoluments attachment) order on your salary, tell us at your assessment, because judgment debts are handled differently.

How long does debt review take?

Most plans run for 3 to 5 years, depending on how much you owe and what you can afford each month. Once everything except your home loan is paid and your bond is up to date, you receive your clearance certificate.

Will my employer or family find out?

Debt review is never published and we do not contact your employer. A debt review flag does appear on your credit report, so anyone who runs a credit check with your consent will see it until you are cleared.

Ready to find out where you stand?

Tell us about your situation. We will assess it for free and explain your options, with no obligation.
